My First CFT Convention —By Hoyt Fong

My First CFT Convention

By: Hoyt Fong, LRCFT Member from CRC

This was the first CFT convention for me. I was impressed with the dynamic Opening, Keynote, and Closing Speakers, including the President of the AFT, the California Attorney General, and the Reverend William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and leader of the growing “Moral Monday” movement.

The tone was set to remind us of the importance of public education and protecting all the hard work historically and currently done by educators. I was especially impressed with the people who were leaving and retiring from education who wanted all students to be equally educated. It appears we have become selfish as a society to only take care of our immediately family but forgot to take care of all students who want an education.

I appreciated the reminder to think globally and this will give us an educated society–not a society moving towards the ‘haves and have-nots’. This conference renewed my hope of unity and compassion blended with high quality education.
